Which best office software for laptop??????

When I bought the Toshiba Satellite Pro with Windows XP the software bundle included One Note but it wanted a product code to operate which I didnt have. Toshiba said this bundle was a demo for a month then I had to buy it from Micosoft.

I need an office function to do my typing and business plans so can anyone suggest good software which wont cause problems.??
Or should I purchase One Note? Will it fulfill my requirements without causing problems?

I'd go with the OpenOffice recommendation, unless you want to donate quite a lot of money to Microsoft.
