Wheres HD gone?

I have a 120gb harddrive but it says it is 111gb big. I have formatted and it still says it. I am giving the comp away soon so I dont want any sensitive info still on the comp especially in the missing 9gb that someone might find.

It is because drive manufacturers use a factor of 1000 to convert from B to KB to MB to GB but the correct factor is 1024. That's why there's a discrepancy. There is no 'missing space'.

But it says capacity 120,031,477,060 and next to it 111gb!

I have nothing on the pc apart from the O/S.

The manufacturer is effectively cheating when he adverties the size of the drive due to the conversion rate

120G = 111G
160g = 149G
and so on

the bigger the drive the bigger the con.

120,031,477,060B equals 111.788GB using the correct factor of 1024.
