All you Programs use Memory, Even when they are not running. Also the more you load, the more windows grabs for it's self

You can cut down on this loss by Going to Run and type MSCONFIG then go to startup tab and remove programs from boot sequence that do not need to load at boot. On of the worst is MS Office Fast Find

On-board graphics?

Right click the task bar and open task manager. Processes, anything there showing a high memory usage? then open performance, how many processes and what are the settings for Physical memory (K)?

Yep forgot that one ed-0

well I forgot about the msconfig one,;-) depends on how many processes are running I suppose.

ok heres whats happening in task manager msimn.exe 22,176 ie explore 41,912 azureus 51,892 SVCHOST.exe 22,240(what is this as theres 8 of these running with small amounts of mem)also Explorer.EXE 24,028 seems to be 2 explore and explorer.physical memory 491040 available 25764 system cache 23568 34 processes it is down to 24 mb i would have thought i had enough in 512 mb

SVCHOST.exe are needed, but do be aware these can be disguised as a virus or malware.Though i dont think you have SVCHOST.exe because there is a good chance your cpu usage would be high.
Though do run your Antivirus in safemode.Tapping F8 on startup will get you into safemode.

The advice above is sound, but if you are unsure of the startup programs in msconfig, try using ccleaner and startup under the tools section click here and remove whats not needed on startup.
