Where has my DVD drive gone?

My faithful (until now) laptop runs win XP home edition, has decided to give me some grief.

I went to play a cd in my DVD drive and it wont even register it as available. I went to start, my computer, and it is not listed there under any drive letter.

The laptop is a Novatech branded one - bought in 2006. it has never had a drive dissappear yet!

Any ideas on where else to look and to see if we can get it back?

It just decided not to register it - i know i never deleted it or trashed it... but hey ho modern technology.

If you can help i'd love to hear from you!

Thanks (an old stuck in the 80's music lover).

No CD/DVD or CD-ROM access is missing error Code 19, Code 31, Code 32, Code 39, or Code 41
Try this if the optical drives are not appearing in My Computer or Device Manager.
(This is sometimes caused by the removal of Roxio or other writing software.)

Download XP_CD-DVD-Fix.zip and save this file to your hard drive. Navigate to where you saved it and double click the file to extract the contents. Locate the EXE file you extracted and double click it. A confirmation dialog will appear when the script is done. You may need to reboot for the change to take effect.
