Partner with HP got this error message today that this file was missing or corrupted: ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32\ntoskrnl.exe
Having googled, it seems my first port of call is to reboot with original xp cd - which of course I don't have cos they never give them to you these days - please -where do I get a genuine version to try this with?

Start > Run, type:

SFC /SCANNOW

and click OK

"...where do I get a genuine version to try this with?"

You borrow one from a friend, or you buy one from a dealer.

Can you get to "Safe mode with Command Prompt" from the advanced startup menu (Press F8 on startup)?

On my Computer the file is in

C:\Windows\System32
C:\Windows\Driver Cache\i386
C:\ServisePackFiles\i386

So you should be able to copy this in windows consul

Whats wrong with trying Safe Mode or Last Known Good Configuration

  woodchip 23:06 25 Nov 08

Should read ServicePackfiles

I can get into the BIOS and I try last known good configuration but just end up with the same error message. I'm not even convinced from reading the posts that using the xp cd would work. If I could just get a copy of that file and resintall it that would be good - but I don't know how to reinstall it if I can't boot up properly.

Its too big to fit on a floppy disc as its over 2Mb
