Where do I start?

I have uploaded numerous video clips to my PC from my Casio Exilim camera. Now I'm trying to find some software to edit the files (cut together, insert effects, soundtrack....) I've downloaded a trial version of Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.0 but it doesn't like the file format - the files, when dragged into the timeline, only appear as audio files. The icons on the files say they're AVI files, but will only open with Windows Media Player. Being a complete novice, I have no idea where to start trying to solve this problem. Do I need to convert the files? How, with what software, etc? Really basic help required! Cheers
