Thanks all, especially Lu-tze (sorry I don't know how to get the accents on your name).

Unfortunately after checking my mobo manual is apprears I need a CPU that fits a Socket-462 socket and none of the athlons I have seen on the sites suggested would fit. Looks like I will have to upgrade my mobo as well :-(

Don't take my word for it, but I think that socket 462 is also known as socket A - many athlons are Socket A.

Ask the more knowledgeable members... someone is sure to know.

when you buy a new cpu do you get a heatsink/fan or do you have to buy seperate ? i've never been sure just out of intrest ? thanks in advance deep

deepblueuk. If you buy an oem version, you will not get a heatsink and fan.

If you buy the retail boxed version you usually do.

john harvey.

Socket 462 is the AMD cpu i.e. duron, athlon and athlon x|p.
