What's the hard drive up to?

Sometimes when I leave my computer for a while usually longer then 15-20mins I come back finding my hard drive active, reading, writing or something, Does anyone know what's happening?

Is windows XP, trying to tidy up the hard disk or something? or defragmenting the hard drive without me choosing too.

it might be your antivirus software running, press CTRL ALT DELETE and see what is running with the highest CPU usage.

It might be creating a restore point!

yes you are right. When the computer is inactive for certain periods windows X\P does indeed perform some routine maintenance.

I read it on the back of a cornflakes packet or somewhere else. lol

The only programs running is Internet Explorer 6 and AOL 6.

CPU usage is between 1-2%

I have not got anti virus software installed.

Anyone experience this?

XP does a mini-defrag in the background when the pc is left idle for a short time. It moves programs about that you have been using recently to improve the access and start times.

Thank You for all your replies.

For God's sake get some anti-virus software up and running!! Your HDD is probably infected with all manner of dangerous rubbish which is eating up your disk and broadcasting itself to other folks on the web.
Norton SystemWorks is good but if $$££ is a problem try:
