immediately to the left of the Start button called, and how do you get icons there like Internet Explorer

do you mean to the right?
quick launch?
right click toolbar/then toolbars and click on quicklaunch

ignore if this isnt what you mean

marsdenboy, there is nothing to the Left of the start button. The only icons are to the right of the start button in the Quick launch bar.

I think he means the Icons above the start button.

Right click on the Start button>Properties>Customise Start Menu as required (the icons will appear alongside the program or application listed).

This is for Windows Classic by the way and might be slightly different for Windows XP not configured for Classic mode.

Any program's icon can be dragged and dropped on the QuichLaunch toolbar, it then only takes one left-click to launch that program.

You can drag icons of programs onto start button or quick start bar

Another way of doing it is to right click just slightly to the left of the ">>" making sure that no icon is activated in the quick launch bar. Click open folder and just drag any icons you need on to the quick launch folder.
