need to update java, first time Ive done this having read different problems on forum can someone tell me the best way to go about it

do I need to uninstall old version first?
& if so
should I uninstall using ccleaner or add/remove programs?

do I need to disable firewall?

is it best to download online or offline?

No just download the latest version and save it then run it {install}

My present version is
Java (TM) 6 update 15
I get a message to say an update is available and I think it removes the older versions when I update.

Personally I would remove any old versions first .Then install the latest version.

You might want to try automatic updating: click here

Not everone`s idea of the best way to go, I know, but I haven`t had any problem with it (XP).

You can download direct from Sun at:

It is best to Uninstall any previous version(s) from Add/Remove Programs.

After reading mfletch contribution I 'clicked here' and downloaded version 16
It removed the older version

I used Snec's link today, it is grreat, got rid of a lot of old ones, plus a load of left-over bits.
