i have an Asus CRW-5224A cd writer, with Nero software.

On the Nero Drive Speed window there is a setting called Spin Down Time... what is this and what should i set it to?

You are best leaving as is unless you have a problems, it's the time it takes for drive to come to rest position for read heads

at the moment its set to infinite-and i think thats what i selected when i first got the drive. i can't remember what the default setting was, so should i select maybe 125ms, 250m, 500ms...?

Thanks, i've tried to set it to 2 min as the link you sent me diesse, suggests this is the default.

Its just that now it won't let me select anything other than infinite

OK - Done a bit of reading, and I think the setting in Nero is for the amount of time a CD in the drive will stay spinning, after it is last accessed.

You wouldn't want it too short, or the drive will be spinning up and down all the time - that's why the 2min is recommended.

Infinite means the disc will be spinning all the time - also not very desirable, I would have thought.

This seems to be an alternate definition to the Hardware spin-down time - which is a relatively short time (few seconds) that the drive takes to stop from full speed.

Another interesting link with lots of programs for CDs. click here
