I have an ADSL max connection and currently get around 2.2meg.
From these readings taken from my Netgear wireless router, doed it mean i should be getting 4.2meg or is that nothing to do with it?

ADSL Firmware Version A2pB023b.d20e
Modem Status Connected
DownStream Connection Speed 4288 kbps
UpStream Connection Speed 448 kbps
VPI

Sounds as if you are restricted by the good old "Copper Wire" syndrome.

I have a wireless router / modem capable of 8mb, but due to being connected to old copper wired exchange, I can get no more than 2.6mb at the best of times.

Not a fault with your hardware, just BT I'm afraid.

The connection speed shown is just the speed that the line is synced at the exchange. In an ideal world that's the speed you'd get, but many factors, such as the age of the copper between you & the exchange, how many people are connected to the same DSLAM, and any jiggery pokery your ISP is doing in the name of "Traffic Shaping" will affect your achieved download speed.

As an example, before I left Demon my line was syncing at around 2600 - 3200kbps, my actual download speeds rarely reached 3 figures - Demon claimed there was nothing they could do to solve this.

Strangely since I moved to O2 I'm getting sync speeds of around 3400 - 3700kbps, and download tests show these figures to be accurate...

Thanks for your replies.
I had to fight tooth and nail with AOL to get me off a 1meg connection as they said the prob was at my end.
After i said i would go to O2 as they had fixed me at 1meg(after a house move) and wouldn't admit it,it strangely went up to between 2.1 and 2.5 meg.
Might still go with O2 though.
