What software is in windows xp home editition

What software is included in Windows XP Home Edition. I need something like word and excel, do I have to buy the software and install it. If so can you recommend which software to use.

Unfortunately, Word and Excel aren't included. They cost extra.

Free, similar office programs are available as Open Office and they *nearly* do the same sort of job.

Windows is just the operating system. In addition you need office software for word processing and spreadsheets.

Microsoft Office is the fully featured version but is quite expensive. Cheapest way to get it is buy the Student & teacher version

Microsoft Works is a kind of reduced content version and is often bundled with a new pc

Open Office is completely free office suite, and gives you word processing, spreadsheet, database etc applications which are very similar to the paid for Microsoft apps.
