What PC to buy

Hi all.Ive got a £1000 to spend on a new pc or laptop and Im not sure what to buy as there is loads to choose from.I am a game and work user.I would like a dvd muti burner on what ever I buy.Ive been told the AMD 3000/64 chip is better than the 3200/64 chip and also not to buy a p4 yet as there is a new board coming out.Can someone please help me as I dont realy understand.
