What is needed for wireless networking?

I intend to wireless network a desktop PC and a notebook. I am aware I need to fit a wireless networking card to each. However, if I want to access the internet (via broadband) from both computers at the same time do I need to add a router and access point to the network. If anyone has successfully set up a wireless network in this way I would appreciate advice before buying unecessary equipment

You can use Internet connection sharing with a peer to peer wireless network to do this but it would mean having your desktop on all the time you want to use the laptop online. Using a router is more covenient but admittedly more expensive.
