when i rebuilt my computer a few months ago i had with the mobo new cables to connect the cd drives to the mobo but i used the old ones but decided today to put the new ones on at first the computer would not start up so cleared the cmos and it started but drives not showing in my computer and in device manager as ide

Put the old cable back and see if that helps

normally ide cables are keyed to prevent wrong installation but double check that pin one (red marker) is on pin one on mobo and it is normally nearest the power supply connection on the drives.BTW have the drives got power can you open and close the tray? does the ide busy light flash on start up all should happen

Just a thought, and if applicable to your system, could you have inadvertantly moved the jumper settings on the back of the drive(s)? Worth checking maybe.

the tryas open and close when a disk inserted starts to spin and then stops

after trying various things computer now ok unsure as to the problem
