out of the blue with no warning avast shutdown, ashAvast.exe seemed to have been deleted and wouldnt start.

tried the usual msconfig stop anything loading at startup, still the same avast stopped working. couldnt even uninstall it. tried wiping the folder but ashShell.dll is in memory.

its driving me crazy, i then tried installing AVG free and that wont install.

i need to remove avast but how if its in memory, ive unticked all avast entries in msconfig.

running spyware checks now but seems to take ages,

cheers

what error messages do you get when trying to install AVG.

Try running an online antivirus checker such as Housecall:

Look in Services to see if Avast is running, Right Click on My Computer\Manage\Services Disable it in there then reboot and try Add Remove virus can stop a anti-Virus working.

PS also stop it from Running in MSCONFIG from the Run Box Startup Tab before you reboot

At the end after trying to install i get this message:

Local machine: installation failed
Installation:
Error: Action failed for file avgamsvr.exe: creating file....
No such file or directory

------------------

I have tried installing in many directories aswell

I tried re-installing avast (downloaded fresh free copy) installs all ok, restart PC and nothing, no program!

Also in the security center (WINXP) there is no list. there is normally a list with a red or green light depending on if you have AV or firewall running. nothing there!
