what files do i need to transfer on my C drive to get keep the dual boot menu, I reloaded win98se but lost dual boot option,winxp pro is on D drive and all file are present and unaltered

You dont need any as XP has them built in. 98 needs to be installed 1st and the partition has to be FAT32. When thats done then you install XP and set the option to display what OS to boot from as per MS article click here

the system was already running a sucessfull dual boot,but i needed to format c:
and reload win98se since then the boot menu to select either 98 or xp has disappeared,so boots directly into win98,but all the origonal xp files are still there and intact on the D drive there fore I assume i need to replace some files deleted from the C drive when I formatted it

Boot into recovery console with XP CD, type

bootcfg /rebuild
