what does this AVG message mean?

MY neighbour said she had a problem with Free AVG8; when I looked I found it was flashing an error message that Link scanner was inactive (may always have been); it's now activated but now updating fails with error message “invalid binary update file”.
Her virus database version was the same as mine at noon-ish today: 270.10.19/1938, so probably there were no updates to receive at that time but the message puzzles me; can anyone shed any light, please.

thanks, lotvic.
should have explained more clearly - it's the "invalid binary update file” message that puzzles me.

Apologies for using the same method but it's a waste to look it up and retype it eh

Try a manual update then do another one immediately after.
Keep your eye open for the small popup at the lower right of the screen.

thank you both; I'll try what you suggest.
