What do HDD makers do when a faulty HDD returned?

One of my HDDs is faulty. Computer just cannot see it. I think that the electronic part is faulty.

It is under warrenty, but I really do not like other people to get hold of my data including work files and family video/photos. The data may still be on HDD because the actual HDD plates may still be good.

What do they do with data on HDD?

Maxtor and Seagate used to test the drive to see if is economic to repair it. If it is, they will zero fill it so it is impossible to retrieve any data.

They then send the refurbished hard drives out to replace those drives returned via warranty.

So in effect you will probably get some else's damaged drive, returned through warranty.

I still think this is the case.
