What is Cat 6 cable used for?

I keep seeing cat 5 is used for networking, can someone tell me what cat 6 is used for.

Same as Cat 5, just higher spec. What is it used for? I guess if the system you are installing calls for it, then you use it.

I bought it by mistake, but as I had it, tried connecting 2 laptops without success. May come in handy in the future.

To connect two PCs, you need a crossover cable. So you can use the cable you bought if you can change the connections.

Cat 6 is for gigabit data rates (1000BaseT). It is backward compatible with Cat 3, Cat 5 and Cat 5E.
Cat 7 has all four wire pairs individually sheilded as opposed to one external shield.
