ASP stands for Active Server Pages.

As the name suggests, the pages run on the web server and perform various tasks, then they output standard HTML [usually] to the web browser.

Normally they are used when reading information from an online database or writing information into the database. Often you see ASP in use for e-commerce sites where user details are registered and orders are processed.

You can run all kinds of tasks in the background with ASP and since all the work is done by the web server the pages load quickly into your browser.

JavaScript, as a contrast, is processed by your web browser software which puts additional load onto your computer and also makes it less secure since the code is sitting on your PC.

ASP is usually used on Windows IIS {Internet Information Services} web hosts and normally connects to Microsoft Access or Microsoft SQL Server databases.

The excellent w3Schools site has some good resource information on ASP, along with pretty much everything else web related: click here

The equally useful WebMonkey site is also worth a look: click here
