what are htdocs?

I am trying to tidy up and revamp a friend's website and he has a folder called htdocs. Inside this seems to be repeats of the various folders which make up the site. I've tried deleting it, but that affects the website and it doesnt come up at all.
Any help please?

stands for 'hypertext' and the contents of the folder are the web pages - that's why you see nothing when you try to delete the folder. When a browser looks at a web site it looks for a file called index.htm or index.html and that's the file that will load as your homepage. The index file should be in the root of the web.
