webhancer infection

I have a bunch of rogue webhancer files disclosed
by Adaware scans on my W98/IE6/AOL system. They've been there for a while and I'm hesitant about getting rid of them them as I've read various reports and PCA forum postings to the effect that deleting them can mess up your internet connection.

So,is it best to:
1) use Adaware to delete
or
2) use Add/Remove Programs method
or
3) ignore them

Being risk averse, I'm inclined to ignore them, but would be interested to know if anyone here has carried out a successful and pain-free removal and if so, how?

Cheers
