Webcams same soft ware

My daughter would like a webcam, so she may converse with friends (cheaper than the phone).
I am confused, do both computers need the same software? Or is all webcam software compatible with each other.
Many Thanks In advance Sandy

Try something like MSN Messenger , Yahoo Messenger , Trillianclick here

Both users need to use a program that will talk to the other ie both using MSN Messenger some like trillian allow different ones to talk.

The webcam will come with suitable software for general use, but you can use a model with software for another in most cases.

I have a D-Link NetEasy Pro 350 that uses a Creative VideoBlaster's software without any problems.

Apart from Trillian, Skype (used for internet telephone purposes) also has a chat section.
