Web pages won't load

I've had an SOS from a friend about problems with web pages. He's using Windows XP and BT Broadband.
Connecting up is ok and the home page will most often load ok but things deteriorate from there. e.g. Loading Ebay home page usually works and clicking on a particular category but then clicking on individual times come back as page not available. It's been suggested it's a firewall problem - Microsoft firewall is off and Norton firewall is working.
Can anyone please suggest anything before BT boffins phone on Tuesday evening (if they don't lose the record of my all again as they did on Friday).
Many thanks
