web access times out, e-mail doesn't

My PC is connected to wireless modem/router by ethernet cable. Works fine, but after a period of inactivity neither Mozilla Firefox nor IE7 can access the web, although router is still connected to the internet, and "repairing" the connection makes no difference. Yet Outlook Express continues to be able to send and receive e-mail. Can't understand it. Other computers (eg my laptop) can still access the internet/web wirelessly using the same connection. Any ideas?
