WDS on Netgear DG834GT as range extender

I have posted about problems with a Netgear router/modem. I have two of these as one was given to me secondhand. It may be that the "new" one only has functioning Wireless and LAN, not modem.
If so, I was wondering about putting the "new" on to use as a range extender, and see mention of using WDS to do this.
Is it possible to get WDS on the DG834GT : I cannot see it mentioned in the router interface. If not, will 3rd party firmware give access to this function, with reasonable reliability of the firmware for other functions (as I would end up needing to access WDS on both routers)?
any recommended sources of 3rd party firmware that would do this?
Thanks for your advice
