WD MyBook 500GB external HD failure

I have the Western Digital 500GB MyBook Essential edition Hard Drive.

The disc worked perfectly until this morning while in use when it started a repeated chucking noise (tsk-tsk, tsk-tsk). I turned it off, unplugged it and on re-boot it' doing it again.

I have tried it several times since but the same happens, except one time when I kept the boot button down for a few seconds and it seemed as if it was working but when I connected the USB to my laptop the drive wasn't found as it would have normally done and the chucking noise started again a while later.

It's still on warranty but I want to find out if there is any chance at all it can work again so I can retrieve my data before I give it away for a new one.

Thank you in advance. Please Help :(

If you can hear the drive spinning then I'm afraid I believe the drive is toast - a mechanical failure that can only be repaired by specialists in a cleanroom. (the sound you can hear is known as the 'click of death')

If the drive is not spinning then a sharp tap may free up the bearings but could also void your warranty - catch22 I'm afraid !

Sorry for that - I've been there myself a few times but can't recall ever getting data back from this situation.

The World Wide Webb offers all sorts of ways of reviving dead HDs and one popular one, I dare say filled with hope more than reality suggests popping it in a freezer for a while.

Then, say the pundits it will work for a short time.

If you give it a try, I suggest sealing with as little air in a bag as possible, and later allowing it to warm up until there is no more condensation before you open the bag and try it
