WD External 500GB USB HD

I am thinking of buying the above to backup XP SP2 lappy, and a W98SE desktop. It will supplied with FAT32. Will there be a prob on it being recognised (550GB) on either PC? Thanks David

You can easily do a Quick Format to make it NTFS, which is what I strongly advise you to do.

1. I thought that W998SE would NOT recognise NTFS, thats why they supply the drive with FAT32, to cover XP & W98SE OS systems?

2. Will both XP & W98SE recognise this large size of drive or will it require partitioning?
Thanks David

As you are only putting back-ups on it, and not actually wanting to run the different OS's, I don't think it will do any harm.

Thanks for your replies - I will use it with Acronis on each of the OS's, for restoring disc images if the OS crashes, hence my queries on the 2 OS I will be using it with? Thanks David

If it was me, I would do as I suggested simply because, if there was any problem due to Formatting one way or the other, I would rather the problem was with Win98 and not XP.

But as I said earlier, I don't think there will be any problem as you are only saving the back-ups, not running the OS's on the external hard drive.

Thanks for your confident reply. I decided to buy it, will let you know outcome. Still unsure whether OS W98SE will recognise a 500GB drive, without it being partitioned first - well see? Thanks again David

Drive arrived works brilliantly, quiet.

1. OS XP - Did Acronis on the C:, took 5 mins to this drive 6 GB.

2. XP Normal backup of data 20GB photos etc 20 mins.

3. OS W98SE NOT yet tried will update you.

4. SO FAR THE BEST THING SINCE SLICED BREAD cost £50 - piece of mind YES. Thanks David

I can not get the new drive to work on my W98SE PC. It has a yellow ? against External Drive WD 500 GB but appears to require a driver to be installed. Any ideas please? Thanks David
