SUBJECT: Current Internet Critical Patch

I think the above is all spoofed.

  Jester2K II 16:29 18 Sep 03

With 400 new ones a week just keep AV up to date and get the real patches from MS.....

  cdb 16:29 18 Sep 03

I thought microsoft didn't send out emails like this?

  Jester2K II 16:30 18 Sep 03

I think the point is it didn't come from MS!!

  Gaz 25 16:32 18 Sep 03

Jester 2k

I keep my AV up to date, but I work for an antivirus comapany in may spare time.

The virus lab got lots of these e-mails today, it contains an attachment which they are looking at now.

cdb,

Microsoft do NOT send anyone e-mails!

  Gaz 25 16:38 18 Sep 03

I also have just received a copy, Antivirus has detected it as Unknown virus..... This is from the virus log....

Warning,

A virus was detected in your e-mails at 4:33pm on Thursday 18th September 2003.

Virus detected by module: Unknown virus detection system

Statistics: 319Kb .pif

Other information: From was a possible spoof. The virus contained code to auto-execute the attachment which contained a possible virus.

Action: This attachment/code was removed from the e-mail, the e-mail is now safe. Please send the file which is in Virus Centre to our Virus lab for examination.

By pasting the code you have squished my screen accross my monitor :(

the problem with this type of thing is that those of us in the forum, or the great majority, know MS do not send out emails like this and further, that AV and updates are critical.

Its those poor souls who are not members that are likely to be caught by someting like this and there is no way of letting them know!

  Jester2K II 16:41 18 Sep 03

Really general "Safe Hex" info would be better than threads like "WARNING NEW VIRUS" etc etc because to be honest there are hundreds of new ones a week. Why focus on a few when really wider knowledge of what to look for would be better....

  Gaz 25 16:47 18 Sep 03

I have an idea: Is it fizzer that likes this?

Smiffy, I know. Well good that you all know, I was just telling you that my AV didnt detect this, so it must be new, it did detect it as a unknown possible virus though/

Sorry about the code.

Gaz
