Ok so all advice and help welcome, I am looking to build my own P.C for the first time. I have basically put a build together and would like help and advice on tweaking it or changing things if they are incompatible (as long as the budget does not increase). The system will be used for gaming and home media, movies etc.

CPU: Intel Core i7 870 Lynnfield, 2.93GHz. £223.24
Motherboard: Asus Maximus III Gene i5/i7. £132.62
RAM: G-Skill Ripjaw 4GB (2x2GB)DDR3 1600MHz. £79.89
GPU: 1GB Palit GTX 460 Sonic Platinum 800MHz. £183.84
Hard Drive: SSD OCZ Vertex 2E 60GB. £112.79
Seagate Barracuda 7,200rpm, 500GB SATA II. £29.85
Optical Drive: LG CH1OLS20 10x B-Ray Rom. £55.99
Case: Thermaltake Element S Mid Tower. £67.56
PSU: Antec True Power New Modular 650w. £73.31
CPU Cooler: Thermaltake Frio Ultimate. £35.77
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit. £75

Total = £1,073.86

Again thankyou all in advance for all and any help...

I would include a second hard drive for backups

It has a second hard drive, the SSD is for windows, games etc, the segate drive is for everything else.

For that price, I expect you will have a lot of heavy duty use, otherwise you are paying for performance that you will never (or unlikely) to need.
