Wake up wireless LAN cards

I am using a SpeedStreet Wi-Fi distribution in my home. I have 2 problems
1) The PC Card in a IBM Think Pad PC (Windows ME) does not "wake up" on boot. I need to unplug and replug it and then it works as expected. Any experience with boot sequences? Or is there a short wake up code sequence? I'm worried I'll damage the connectors with the frequent insertions.
2) The wireless LAN network appears to be causing "wake up" messages when the connected PCs are in standby. Any experience in temporarily shutting them down so the machines can take a "rest" ?

For item 1, a workaround is to open Device Manager, then choose Refresh from the menu. This should re-detect and initialise the USB card.

For item 2, check that 'Wake on Lan' is not enabled in the BIOS of the machines that are being woken from their slumber.
