Waiting for Excel to accept DDE command mail merge

Whenever I try to open a Word document that contains mail merge fields linked to an Excel spreadsheet I get the following message at the bottom of the Word document :

Waiting for Microsoft Excel to accept DDE commands

It just stays like that until I click somewhere then it says in the titlebar Not Responding.

This has been happening ever since I upgraded to Service Pack 3 on my XP system.

Is there a way of fixing this so that I can mail merge again or do I need to uninstall SP3 and go back to SP2?

I'm using Microsoft Office 97 by the way.

Is Ignore other applications ticked in Excel Tools > Options > General?

No "Ignore other applications" box is not ticked

Well can't get DDE to work using their instructions but ODBC seems to work alright.

Changed the name of Excel spreadsheet so it cannot try to link to it.

Opened the Word document - it says cannot find data source - click Find Data Source button

Tick the box for Select Method on the right

Navigate to Excel spreadsheet and select it and click Open

Then it gives you a choice of DDE or ODBC - choose the ODBC option

Then select the table you want as the data source - in mine there is only one - click OK

Click Mail Merge Helper button on toolbar

Then just Mail Merge as usual (re-setup any Query Options).
