Recently I've gone through a variety of software uninstall/install routines - all apparently succesful.

However, for the past few days, every time I re-boot, I finish up with a window in the middle of the desktop that says:

"Error! could not locate INF file E:content\win9x\win98\W98finish.inf"

Is this important? If so where do I find it, and how should it be reinstalled? Lastly, out of interest, what's it for?

Not sure what it is but sounds like a remnant of something you uninstalled that has been left in the registry. If your system runs ok then use a registry cleaner to get rid of the error message, such as EasyCleaner click here

You can download the file from click here then copy it to C:\WINDOWS\INF folder also right click the file and choose install
