First establish your connection from your source to the computer. In order of preference to get the best matching, make one of the following connections. 1) From the Tape/Line Out sockets on the back of a Hi-Fi unit. Or 2) From the Headphone/Earpiece socket on you source. Or 3) From the speaker outputs of your audio unit

Then download a recorder from the net, a popular free one is Musicmatch Jukebox which you'll get from this link: click here .With this you will be able to record .wav files to your hard drive. To enable recording, doubleclick on your desktop speaker icon to access the Windows Volume Controls. Click Options, then Properties and select Recording, then make sure there is a tick against wav and the level is set part way up.

Then you can start recording, saving the tracks to your HDD as .wav files. Once you've accumulated the wav files you need, if you wish to create music CDs, open your CD writing program and using the music CD option, select the wav files you want to record. Then let the CD Writer do it's work.

When recording from LPs or other analogue discs or tapes, you may suffer badly from surface or background noise. Once you are used to recording, you may wish to take advantage of a program specifically designed to "De-Click" and reduce surface noise. You can get Groove Mechanic, an automatic editing program to reduce surface noise and clicks from the first of the following links. The second link is a further source to learn from:-
