"Volume" of an External HDD

The Bask-up on my Windows Live OneCare wants me to covert my Pc's HDD and my external HDD from FAT32 to NTFS. There are links to programmes that carry out this transformation but these programmes require you to enter the "Volume" of the HDD. Can anyone explain to me what this is and in what format it should be entered in the programme. Incidentally, what is the advantage of NTFS over FAT 32?

Thanks for the tip. I have printed out the instructions but before proceeding would like to have advice as to whether:-
a) In view of the cautions in the instructions, this operation is worth the hassle on an old computer (5years) which will probably be replaced by the end of this year?
b)Do I need to convert my PC to NTFS as well as the external HDD and, if I do, which do I do first?
