Volume control disappeared from Task Bar

  Yimbo 16:18 PM 24 Jun 11

It was there yesterday! But today it's gone!

When I go to "Control Panel/Sound and Audio devices", and tick the box "Place volume icon in the taskbar", I get a message "Windows cannot display the VC control on the taskbar, because the VC program has not been installed". I'm directed to install it via "Add or Remove Programs"

Thereafter,I'm lost! Can anyone please tell me how to do what's required?

Just try a normal re-start, it will probably re-appear.

My (W7) laptop is hopeless in this respect. Various tray icons start 'if they feel like it'. Even after I made Factory Resets on a couple of occasions.

For volume, I made an extra shortcut and stuck it on the Taskbar.

Nontek, I've tried a normal re-start, but it hasn't worked!

Robinofloxley (what a great name!!) where's the place to obtain the short-cut?

Have a look at this from Microsoft

Sorry I relaise that it says for XP but when I found that page, up came the Mr. Fixit from Microsoft saying that he could help if you clicked on him.

chub_tor - - Thanks for the link! It's XP that I use, so the page is relevant! I tried "Method 1: Add the Volume icon" but that just took me to the same issue as before!

So I'm about to try "Method 2 Save a new copy ....." I've never attempted anything like this before - but I'll have a go and see how I get on!

Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Hi, chub-tor - just before trying "Method 2" as you suggested, I did a System Restore in Safe Mode - and on re-boot, the Volume Control is back in place on the Taskbar! Mission accomplished!

Thank you all so much for your help and suggestions!

One day, just maybe, I'll be a helper, and not continually being helped!!

Make a new shortcut anyway, it saves rebooting just to get Volume back.

Right click desktop>New Shortcut. Browse to C:\Windows\System32\sndvol32.exe.

Drag shortcut to Quick Launch (or keep on Desktop).

Quick Launch XP

Will do, robinofloxley! You never know when it might happen again!
