VLC with MKV Files (hdx264) digital sound gripe!

I currently play all my movies in mkv (hdx264) format on my pc straight into my TV linked via HDMI and Optical tos-link for sound
now i currently use VLC player and have done for ages which is great

some problem is that a lot of my movies on my hard drive are encoded with DTS 5.1 or DTS/DD 6.1

if I go to audio options on VLC player and switch to A/52 over S/PDIF to get these sounds going through my av reciever it just goes bonkers with a weird stuck record/jumping CD type sound

the 5.1 option works fine but will not pick up these options

anyone come across this and is there anything to remidy it?
or is there another media player that will pick this up thats available to download
not a major problem but something thats just griping me a little
