VLC is not a file format.
VLC is a player that will play most file extensions on your computer.

what is the file ext of those you want to burn and then play on your DVD player? Are they .avi?

Look at your documentation for your DVD player and see what file extensions it can play (presume you mean to play them on your TV)

You then need to convert your files to one that is supported on your DVD player.

DVD Flick is a good free program to turn .avi files into a DVD to watch on your TV click here
Before you download the program, download the guide .pdf to see how to do it click here
