Visual Studio Academic version

I am hoping to learn to program using this software and see that it is available as an academic version. Does anyone know more about how this works?
For example, do i have to be enrolled at a college or can i buy it to teach myself, with help from books and friends?
When you buy this, is it actual software or something i need to verify and then obtain from MS?
Any advice would be welcome.

If your school/university is part of MSDN Academic Alliance your can get it for free. If your not enrolled at a school you will need to buy the full version.
