vista system repair

I did post this originally in the Vista forum but it seems bereft of visitors.

I've recovered the data from a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo Li 1818 which will not boot.

Although the data has been saved it would be preferred to make the system boot to the state it was in before failure.
Will a system repair run from the installation disk remove the personal data?

I believe that a system repair is just that. It repairs the system files on a corupted operating system which is the reason it's preferable to a reformat.
If you do manage to do a Vista repair, you should have a working pc with all your programmes and files as they were.

That is what I was hoping for.
Having saved the personal data the owner is resigned to a fresh install but if a repair can be made without losing programmes etc. that would be preferable.

Just a thought.
This will not work if you have SP1 installed, unless your Vista installation DVD includes the SP1, or you create a Vista SP1 slipstream installation DVD.
So basically your Vista DVD must not be an older version than the one you have installed.
As we all update on a regular basis,i assume your only option will be a reformat.)O:!
