Vista struggling to boot up then it freezes

I woke up this morning to find that my Vista pc had shut down during the night following what looks like a windows update. It said that there was a problem with the system file.I got it to boot and after a while it froze, after shutting it down with the off button it said there was a problem with the drive.I went into the bios and noticed that the boot order was CD/DVD disk first, i changed this to hard drive first and it booted up again, however it has since froze.I have run bitdefender online virus scanner and found nothing and also ran a memory disgnostic and it came back clear.Microsoft ran an update last night which I tried to use system restore to get a restore point before, however there is only one restore point showing and it won't go back to it.Help.

Did you run System Restore in normal mode or in Safe Mode?

Sometimes SR is more successful in Safe Mode. Just be aware that, when you run it like this, you can't undo the restore.

Hi Jimmy

The file its reporting that it cant repair is settings.ini. This resides in folder C:\windows\winsxs. You will need to locate a version of this file either on the OS cd or get someone with the same OS to put a copy on a cd, flash drive etc as you need to replace your copy of it, then follow the instructions on Fruit Bats link near the bottom.
Note that the instructions refer to "elevated" this means that you need to run CMD.EXE as administrator (right click it and choose "run as administrator").

Decided to try a clean system restore which didn't work, came up with errors.Found after I couldn't re-boot at all.Error read Disk Boot Failure, insert system disk and press enter.
I decided today that best answer was a new hard drive, which I have installed and everything is fine again, apart from I am still re-installing ann the programs at quarter to one in the morning. Thanks guys for all your help, you are invaluable.
