Vista and MS Office 1997

My brother is shortly to buy a new laptop which will run on Vista Basic. It doesnt come with any office software that I know of. I have an original OEM of Microsoft Office Professional 1997. (with certificate of authenticity) It came with my first computer which is now broken up.

Will MS Office Professional 1997 run on Vista and will I be able to install it on his new laptop for him?

This is Microsoft's official verdict - No

but I know of people who have successfully done so - check out user forums - an example below

PS Of course what MS are saying in that first link is that they no longer support Office 97 - not that it won't work

It does work, I have it installed on my Vista machine fully working.

or you could just download open office as it is a very good alternative to Microsoft office and it is free

Many thanks for the responses. Will give it a go and if all else fails will do a system restore. But it looks as though it should work.
