Vista internet icon shortcut problem

I recently upgraded from XP pro to Vista Ultimate (although I'm beginning to wish I hadn't!) another story

Any way sometimes on start up if I click on a internet icon link i.e. e-bay nothing happens the little circle appears as if its connecting as normal then nothing the machine freezes and I have to reboot. This only happens occasionally and on all links except the internet explorer icon installed during setup. This seems random but when it happens it’s a real pain as a reboot is the only way to carry on.

Also if a place a shortcut on the desktop i.e. Google the icon reverts to the standard “e” and not the Google logo, what ever I do it will not display the logo? Does any one know if there is a fix to the rather annoying problem?

If I right click on the screen and select “show classic icons” everything is as it should be, but if I display my preferred view Medium icons my shortcut reverts back to the “e”.

I look forward to any ideas!
