Vista hides exe files

Have just bought a laptop with Vista business. I put all my program exe files onto a memory stick to install - quite a number of programs in all. They are contained in a folder called "exe files various".

When I loaded the memory stick with exe files into my Vista laptop, only 7 were showing in Vista's version of Explorer. Among the originals I had folders for MS Office 2003 and 2007. Neither the folder that contained them or the files inside showed. Luckily I had the Office 2003 files on a CD and was able to use this to install.

Can anyone explain how/why Vista hides these things and what to do?

Could it be the usb drive faulty? Do you use 'safely remove hardware' before removing the drive?
Have no problems with these drives so long as I use the 'safely remove hardware' instead of just unplugging.
