can anyone please advise me on a decent printer that does not cost the earth,just bought a new computer and old (very old)printer not up to job,many thanks.

Agree with woodchip. What to do is decide on a budget and decide what you want it to do, then look at the different manufacturers and then check that there is a Vista driver available on the manufacturers website for it.
You've given no idea of price, whether size is an issue or what you do with it so its impossible to give any specific advice. Its kind of like saying I want a car, which one will I get. How can anyone advise with no idea of what you use it for?
