Vista Booting to Sys Recovery

We have an Acer Aspire 5920 laptop. When attempting to boot it takes several minutes an eventually boots to System Recovery Options. This states 'choose an operating system to recover' but the screen is completely blank. We click Next an get the following options:
Startup Repair- this checks for problems, then tries to fix problems but eventually just g
System Restore-

Have you tried starting Safe Mode tapping F5 as its starting, then Go to System Restore and run an old date bold text are system points
