Virus protection for laptop.

I've just bought a laptop which has XP loaded, so I've got a firewall, but no virus protection.
I'd like to download AVG onto it, but of course that means going on line. Would it be too risky to go on line unprotected while organising the download, or could I download it onto my PC (which is protected) and somehow transfer it to the laptop?
Thanks in advance

It nevers bothers me. I always set up new or reformatted machines completely, including all updates, before thinking about install an AV program. Saves them getting in the way, and I've never had a problem yet.
But if you are bothered, yes you can download to your desktop and copy the file via a pen drive.

Thanks Ventanas. It's easy to get paranoid about these things!!
