my brother has inadvertently been tricked into accepting this new virus scam whereby he saw a pop up come up with the windows logo on it advising him to "click here" to download windows updates. when he clicked it, the virus got into his system. It has blocked his access to the internet and there is no way to close the pop up window which now reads "potential spyware has been detected on your system click here to download software to remove it" clicking the box only takes him to a website that demands $49.

he has tried system restore, and scanned his system with virus checkers that have found nothing.

any ideas how he can get rid of this pop up box. it wont go away?

Hi

Try MBAM first

Here are a few free antispyware/malware programs to use,

Only run one at a time

Always check for any updates before running

SAS/ Superantispyware click here

MBAM/ Malwarebytes/ Antimalware click here

DRWebCurit/ click here

As mfletch says, MBAM is the one to try first but if his access to the internet is blocked you will need to talk him through Safe Mode with Networking: click here

Here is another source for MBAM:click here

The site itself seems very slow to-day.
